Dramatic Black History Month

To celebrate Black History Month in October, Year 10 drama students looked at characters and events from the National Theatre’s production of ‘Small Island’ that focuses on the prejudice and inequality faced by the passengers of the Empire Windrush in 1948.

This practical lesson explored scenes from the play and photographs from the time using dramatic strategies like freeze frames, thought tracking and physical theatre. We followed the character Hortense in her experiences of leaving the Caribbean to be with her husband Gilbert in Earls Court, West London.

The lesson ended with a reflective discussion about the future and modern-day Britain.   Mr Sheridan
