Bookish Revels for World Book Day

Fearnhill celebrated all things bookish as part of World Book Day with special events organised for all students throughout the week.

Students were able to enjoy a dedicated livestream reading in the Library each lunchtime, one chapter each day of The Girl in the Lewandowski Top, and a whole-school sharing of the Roald Dahl short story The Way Up To Heaven with each class starting each period throughout the day with a section of the story.

Tutor time saw a Book Quiz and Guess the Shelfie competition where students had to guess staff members from photographs of their book shelves which was surprisingly difficult!

The Library was a hub of activity all week with an ongoing Book Jar quiz – Library & Literacy Assistant Mrs Thurlby working her creative magic to produce jars of objects giving clues to famous books. Thursday saw parents of Years 7&8 invited to visit the Library after school which was a great success.

Mrs Thurlby said: “It was lovely to welcome parents into the Library and the feedback was that they enjoyed seeing where their sons and daughters liked to hang out in school. This will definitely be a regular event for the Library!”

Of course students were also able to take advantage of the National Book Token scheme with the special tokens able to be redeemed for a selection of specially-issued World Book Day books.

One of the highlights of the week was the Staff Dress-Up Treasure Hunt. A number of staff dressed up as literary characters (below) and students had to guess who they were.

Year 7 students joined 650 schools across the country who linked up to a  live-streamed interview with former Children’s  Laureate Michael Morpurgo.

Mrs Bennett, head of Faculty, said “It’s has been delightful to see our Fearnhill family respond so enthusiastically to this year’s World Book Day events.

“Our students have responded with positivity and passion; the library in particular has been a buzzing place all week!

“We hope that this week creates fun memories for the children, and their engagement and interest in reading and storytelling, goes from strength to strength during their time here.”
