Introduction to Sixth Form
Fearnhill has a flourishing and aspirational sixth form. We aim to be in the top 25% of sixth forms in the country for students achieving their academic potential.
We work in close collaboration with the Letchworth Consortium to be able to offer an extensive range of Level 3 and Level 2 courses. All students are offered the opportunity to further develop their independent enquiry skills through the Extended Project Qualification.
Fearnhill School is rightly proud of its sixth form. We have the highest expectations of our students and help them to develop as self-confident young adults with a strong sense of social, moral, spiritual and cultural values. We provide opportunities for our students to develop their leadership skills with the opportunity to be part of a proactive prefect body, student voice and through an Enrichment programme designed to develop personal, social and employability skills.
Students are also expected to take an active role in helping develop the younger students in the school. Our sixth formers act as mentors to KS4 students and also help KS3 students develop their literacy and numeracy skills and confidence. Sixth formers at Fearnhill are also expected to take an active part in the House system by being House Captains and acting as positive role models to the rest of the school.
Students at Fearnhill are well supported. For students to be successful it is important that they are happy, safe and motivated. Our pastoral care supports our students to ensure that this is the case. We have a full time non-teaching Pastoral Care Co-ordinator who along with the sixth form tutors, monitor students’ welfare and progress and offer support and advice whenever needed. All students are a member of a tutor group of around 23 students. Their form tutor will meet with them every day and is their first point of contact for information sharing, answering queries and dealing with issues that may arise.
Academic progress is closely monitored and students receive regular feedback on their progress towards their target grades. Parents are kept informed through academic progress reports and through conversations with the Sixth Form Tutor. Students are advised and supported through their university application process. Students are also supported with alternative routes after sixth form such as applying for apprenticeships.
